The great history of GSO

GSO is the oldest Athletic Association of Cyprus founded in 1892. It also played a leading role in the foundation of SEGAS (Greek Federation of Amateur Athletics) and also established the Pan Cypriot Games with the first games taking place in Limassol in 1896.

GSO participated in the first Olympic Games in 1896 in Athens and succeeded by gaining a golden medal in the pistol.

From then, GSO developed intense athletic activity in Cyprus and Greece. In 1925 organized and hosted Pan-Hellenic Championship of Track and Field, while in 1928 established the Pan Cypriot School Games.

In 1929, GSO made a revolutionary move, allowing the participation of women in games and thus played a leading part in the social evolution of Cyprus.

A landmark for GSO was the victory of its athlete Stelios Kyriakidis in the Marathon of Boston in 1946 while a lot of its athletes were distinguished in Balkan and Pan European Games.

Homage to Stelios Kyriakidis

Stelios Kyriakidis, GSO athlete of Track, is the person that has stamped with golden letters the passage of himself and Cyprus through World Athletics and remained in the history as the modern Fidipides.

Kyriakides was a high class Marathon runner that represented Cyprus and Greece in Balkan, International, World and Olympic Games, breaking the record of Marathon, which he kept for 33 years, putting his name in the Guinness Book of Records.

His biggest achievement was his victory in the Marathon of Boston in 1946 at the moment where the world tried to overpass World War II and Greece was going through the worst moments of her modern history.

As he himself reported, he wanted to run and win in order to exploit his victory by asking the American People to help Greece that was experiencing the destructions of WW2 and a civil war.

This big athlete of GSO remained forever faithful to GSO, the association that highlighted him, honoring in this way the oldest athletic association of his country.
